The Monteserra Butterfly House, the only structure of its kind in the whole of Southern Italy, is a large tropical greenhouse where hundreds of butterflies, among the most beautiful and extraordinary in the world, with the most varied shapes and colours, are free to fly. It is possible to observe them up close, discover the details of their life cycle and understand the links with the natural environment. In a dedicated exhibition space you can also find silkworms and leaf-cutting ants.
The tropical greenhouse is housed within the Monte Serra Park Environmental Education Centre, a natural reserve of Mediterranean scrub that extends for 30 hectares a stone’s throw from the city and accessible to all visitors. Over the years the Park has become a popular destination for families, school groups and tourists.
Inside it is possible to take advantage of many services designed and studied to bring you closer to the knowledge of the Etna area and its protection: a walk on foot or by bike along the paths to appreciate the flora, the medicinal and aromatic plants, the oak forest, or even a break in the equipped areas.
In fact, along the pedestrian paths of the Park there are various areas equipped for rest equipped with wooden sheds, tables and benches for picnics. For the little ones there is a playground area.
