Barone Vincenzo’s Pernamazzoni company is a rural structure immersed in the Cava Ispica gorge, a river valley that runs for 13 kilometers across the Iblean plateau. Prehistoric necropolises, monastic hermitages, Christian catacombs, rock oratories and ancient residential areas are kept here.
The refuge was founded way back in 1991 by the will of a group of friends. We are in a naturalistic and archaeological area, a long, narrow gorge that extends for 3 kilometers and is entirely made up of terraces, abandoned for 60 years. We started with the restoration of the paths, thanks to the support of local associations including the volunteers of the Legambiente summer camps. Today the area covers an area of approximately 30 hectares including the area used for camping.
The company hosts a carob grove, an olive grove and fruit trees scattered with medlars, citrus fruits, persimmons, walnuts and almond trees. We also grow Ispica sesame: recognized in 2016 as a Slowfood Presidium, it is an ancient crop introduced in ancient times by the Arabs which today we harvest exclusively by hand following the long and complex traditional process. Finally we produce aromatic herbs, capers, thyme, oregano.
